Jump into the colorful world of acrylic painting! This class will cover the fundamental techniques, from essential brushstrokes and color mixing to understanding paint consistency, perfect for absolute beginners. You'll learn how to choose the right materials and practice simple exercises to build confidence with the medium. By the end of the course, you'll complete a small, finished painting and have the skills to continue your artistic journey. This class is for beginning and intermediate students. Materials
List
Brushes:
Small rounds (#0, #3 preferably), filberts (#2, #6, #8, #12, #14), one fan or mop brush for blending, various flats are fine also.
Canvas:
Bring one or more canvas boards sized 9x12, 11x14, 14x18, 16x20, or 18x24.
Paints:
Paints for landscapes
: Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Yellow Medium (optional), Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red Light, Cadmium Red Medium (optional), Veridian Green, Alizarin Crimson, Burnt Sienna, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue, and Prussian Blue.
Paints for portraits
: Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Light, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red Light, Cadmium Red Medium (optional), Alizarin Crimson, Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue, and optional Black.
Additional Supplies:
Retarder or glazing medium to slow drying time
Masking tape
Standard circular color wheel
Paper towels (optional)
Sta-Wet palette paper
Palette knife
Plastic palette container (e.g. Masterson model with a red lid for acrylics)
Watercolor pencil in burnt umber
Small or medium table easel (e.g. Artist’s Loft Deluxe Adjustable Box Table Easel from Michaels or any comparable model).
Please bring 2–3 reference photos you’d like to paint; we’ll select the best one together. Also, bring a couple of your past paintings (originals, prints, or photos on your phone) to share during the first class.
